Why Did Bengal Sports Minister Biswas Resign Following the Messi Event?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Dec 16 (NationPress) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday accepted the resignation of state Sports Minister Aroop Biswas, who took moral responsibility for the management failures during the event featuring Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi at the Salt Lake Stadium here.
In his handwritten resignation letter in Bengali, Biswas stated that since the Chief Minister had established a probe committee led by a retired judge of the Calcutta High Court, he is stepping down as state Sports Minister to ensure the impartiality of the investigation.
"I hope you will approve my request in this matter," read Biswas's resignation letter, who also serves as the state Power Minister.
For the time being, the Chief Minister will personally oversee the operations of the Sports Department. "The Chief Minister has chosen to directly manage the state Sports Department until the probe led by a retired judge of the Calcutta High Court is concluded," disclosed a senior cabinet member.
However, with the crucial Assembly elections in West Bengal set to be announced shortly after the final voters’ list is published in February next year, insiders suggest it is improbable that another individual will be appointed to lead the sports department during this interim period.
Meanwhile, Biswas will retain his position in the cabinet as Power Minister.
Biswas had faced intense backlash from various sectors, including civil society and opposition parties, regarding the chaos at the Salt Lake Stadium last week due to significant management failures.
The event had experienced turmoil, with accusations of inadequate crowd control, damage to public property, and insufficient arrangements, leading to widespread criticism from attendees and civil society organizations.
Biswas was present at the stadium alongside Messi during the event. Numerous spectators, civil society members, and opposition leaders have claimed that while Biswas and his family were surrounding the football star on the stadium floor, ticket-paying fans were denied proper access to the football icon.
These allegations further fueled the political controversy surrounding the event, with opposition parties accusing the state government of severe mismanagement and favoritism.
