Bulawayo, June 29 (NationPress) Zimbabwe opener Brian Bennett has been ruled out of the current Test match against South Africa at Queens Sports Club due to a mild concussion. Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) announced that Prince Masvaure will replace Bennett, marking his 10th appearance in Test cricket.
The injury occurred when Bennett was hit on the helmet while trying to execute a hook shot off the last delivery of the sixth over bowled by South Africa fast bowler Kwena Maphaka. He had managed to score 19 runs off 28 balls, which included four boundaries before retiring hurt.
“Zimbabwe opener Brian Bennett will not continue in the ongoing Test match against South Africa at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo after being diagnosed with a mild concussion. As per concussion protocols, he will take no further part in the match,” stated ZC in an announcement on Sunday.
As the match progressed into day two, Zimbabwe was positioned at 94/2 in 27 overs, with Sean Williams and captain Craig Ervine remaining unbeaten on 45 and 24 runs, respectively.
Earlier, South Africa declared their innings at 418/9, featuring a stunning debut performance by Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who scored a remarkable 153 runs. Additionally, number eight batter Corbin Bosch achieved his maiden Test century and remained not out.
At just 19 years and 93 days, Pretorius has become the youngest South African men’s player to score a Test century and the seventh from his nation to achieve a hundred on debut in this format.
Following the declaration, South Africa, who recently triumphed in the World Test Championship against Australia at Lord's just two weeks prior, received a brilliant start with the ball. Debutant pacer Codi Yusuf dismissed Takudzwanashe Kaitano and Nick Welch before Williams and Ervine stabilized Zimbabwe’s innings.
