New Delhi, June 20 (NationPress) The escalating tension between Bhaichung Bhutia and All India Federation Football (AIFF) President Kalyan Chaubey has reached a boiling point. The two have been exchanging sharp remarks, with Chaubey extending an invitation to Bhutia for the upcoming AIFF Executive Committee meeting on July 2.
Since Chaubey's election victory in 2022 over Bhutia, the former Indian football captain has been a persistent critic of his administration. With Indian football seemingly facing unprecedented challenges, both sides have exchanged serious accusations.
“We uphold two core slogans - 'football unites the world' and 'Indian football, forward together'. These reflect our united vision, and I am confident that collaborative efforts can elevate Indian football,” said Chaubey.
“In our democratic society, every individual enjoys the constitutional Right to Freedom of Speech. As a member of the AIFF Executive Committee, Mr. Bhaichung Bhutia has a legitimate platform to voice his opinions and contribute positively to the advancement of Indian football during the committee meetings,” the AIFF president’s statement read.
During a press conference at the Delhi Press Club on June 13, Chaubey accused the Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools, a series of commercial academies managed by the former player, of exploiting families' emotions.
According to the latest statement, Kalyan remarked that Bhutia’s agenda in previous meetings has not aligned with the interests of Indian football, focusing instead on opposing the governing body’s decisions.
“It has been noted that since Mr. Bhaichung Bhutia's loss in the September 2022 elections, he has persistently made unfounded accusations and portrayed a distorted view of the AIFF. Such conduct not only harms the Federation's reputation but also casts a shadow on Indian football internationally,” the statement continued.
“The AIFF is always receptive to constructive feedback from Mr. Bhutia for the growth of Indian football. Unfortunately, in most Executive Committee meetings, his contributions have largely revolved around disputing decisions made by the entire board, rather than presenting meaningful proposals,” it added.
In response, Bhutia held a press conference at the Calcutta Journalists Club on Friday, making serious allegations and describing how, under Chaubey's leadership, the AIFF has devolved into a 'circus'.
Ultimately, Kalyan Chaubey invited Bhutia to share any constructive suggestions he may have regarding the national team's future.
“I would like to inform you that Mr. Bhutia is welcome to attend the AIFF Executive Committee Meeting set for July 2, 2025. The official invitation for his participation was sent by the AIFF Secretariat on June 11, 2025. He is encouraged to present any constructive proposals, which will be thoroughly discussed by the entire executive board in a spirit of transparency and collaboration for the advancement of Indian football,” the statement concluded.
