New Delhi, May 7 (NationPress) Royal Challengers Bengaluru's bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar described death bowling as both instinctual and strategic, highlighting the necessity of being one step ahead of the batsman during critical moments in an IPL match.
"Death bowling is like an instinct. It depends on the match situation and your thought process," Bhuvneshwar stated in a video released by RCB. "There are times when everything seems normal, yet you feel the batter is poised to make a surprising move. That’s what we refer to as being proactive—anticipating the batter’s next move."
The seasoned fast bowler, returning to RCB after 16 years, has been pivotal in the team’s impressive bowling performance this season. Despite the fluctuating results of Bengaluru’s campaign, their bowling—especially during the death overs—has remained a reliable strength. Currently, RCB holds the second-best economy rate in death overs for IPL 2025, allowing just 10.23 runs per over between overs 17 to 20, narrowly trailing behind Mumbai Indians' 10.22.
Alongside Josh Hazlewood and Yash Dayal, Bhuvneshwar has created a formidable pace attack that has collectively secured 40 wickets.
The 34-year-old emphasized the significance of their collaboration.
"When you consider Yash, Josh, and myself—we share similarities but also have distinct characteristics,” he mentioned. “Each of us can swing the ball; Josh brings his height, Yash contributes a left-arm angle, and together we can bowl in various phases of the match. These attributes greatly enhance our collective performance."
Although RCB faced challenges at home earlier this season, Bhuvneshwar has consistently delivered. He recorded identical figures of 2 for 26 against Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings, albeit in defeats.
His most impactful performance occurred in the return match against DC in Delhi, where he claimed 3 for 33, taking down KL Rahul, Ashutosh Sharma, and Tristan Stubbs—a crucial win for RCB. Notably, he dismissed Rahul and Ashutosh in the 17th over and secured Stubbs in the final over.
Overall, Bhuvneshwar has bowled 11 overs during death in IPL 2025, capturing five wickets with an economy of 10.09—an essential statistic for a team relying on its bowling strength.
"In team meetings, we strategize in specific ways. However, on the field, instinct often dictates our actions," Bhuvneshwar explained. "As long as you remain proactive and manage to direct the batter’s actions, you’ll maintain an upper hand in the game."
RCB has also thrived due to the camaraderie within their bowling unit. Bhuvneshwar indicated that mutual trust and support have played a vital role in their achievements.
"There have been instances when I haven’t performed at my best, but my teammates have supported me, and when one player struggles, the others rise to the occasion,” he added. "We complement each other well, which is a very positive sign."
With 193 wickets in IPL history—second only to Yuzvendra Chahal—Bhuvneshwar continues to adapt and influence matches.
