Bhuvneshwar Kumar: RCB's path to victory was wickets, not runs against GT
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Senior pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar said Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) best chance of defeating Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026 lay in taking wickets quickly rather than defending runs, after the defending champions fell short by four wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on 1 May.
The bowling strategy
Acknowledging the seam-friendly conditions, Bhuvneshwar explained RCB's tactical approach. "There was some help for seamers, and we had Romario Shepherd as our third seamer. Suyash Sharma is someone who is not easy to pick. We wanted to get wickets as quickly as possible," he said post-match. The strategy meant Krunal Pandya was left out of the bowling attack, with the franchise opting for pace-based options to exploit early conditions.
Batting shortfall acknowledged
Bhuvneshwar also conceded that RCB's batting unit, typically among the tournament's most prolific, underperformed in the contest. "It's a long tournament — 14 matches. You cannot be perfect in each and every match in any department," he noted. However, he emphasised consistency across the season: "The way we have batted in the whole tournament it's been good. We have scored 200, we have scored more than 200."
He added that bowlers cannot always compensate for batting lapses. "Sometimes we give 200 runs but batsmen never complain — they go and chase it out. So it was our duty to try our best, and then we did what we could."
Dew factor shifts balance
On the broader tournament dynamics, Bhuvneshwar highlighted how conditions have favoured chasing sides. "If you look at this IPL, chasing is a bit easier in any ground because of the way the wicket behaves and dew comes. So, yes, it could be different. But we didn't win the toss. We were asked to bat first. We tried our best in bowling."
Purple Cap, but team first
Currently holding the Purple Cap for leading wicket-taker, Bhuvneshwar downplayed individual accolades. "It's good that I got the Purple Cap. But I think I have come out of that time where I want to achieve something individually. Now it's more of a team purpose. I'm not young anymore," he said. He credited the management's backing for his performances and reiterated his focus on collective success as IPL 2026 progresses.
