Virat Kohli on Wednesday heaped praise on Bhuvneshwar Kumar, lauding the pacer's game awareness and longevity ahead of his 200th IPL match for Lucknow Super Giants against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Ekana Cricket Stadium on Thursday. Kohli, speaking in a tribute video released by RCB, described the Uttar Pradesh fast bowler as among the finest in tournament history.

Bhuvneshwar's IPL record

Bhuvneshwar has taken 215 wickets across 199 IPL matches at an average of 26.40 and an economy rate of 7.68, including two five-wicket hauls and two four-wicket hauls. His best bowling figures stand at 5/19. The milestone represents a rare achievement for a fast bowler in the shortest format.

Kohli's assessment

"It's a big feat to play 200 games, especially as a fast bowler," Kohli said. "That tells you the longevity, and he's played so much cricket over all these years across all formats, and he's been such a successful bowler." Kohli singled out Bhuvneshwar's cricket intelligence as the defining trait. "The thing that stands out for me with Bhuvi has always been his understanding of the game and his cricket smarts. He's probably been among the top three pacers in IPL history," the RCB star added. "If you look at his economy, the number of wickets he's taken, and the amount of dot balls he bowls every game, it's remarkable. He's someone you can trust under pressure every single time."

Hazlewood's perspective

Josh Hazlewood, RCB's Australian pace bowler, also paid tribute to Bhuvneshwar's skill set and tactical acumen. "I think his skill set is second to none — swing bowling at its highest level," Hazlewood said. "The lengths he hits consistently, moving the ball both ways, and the way he reads the game are exceptional. For someone who bowls the first over almost every match, his communication and ability to assess conditions quickly are key." Hazlewood noted that Bhuvneshwar is the first fast bowler to reach 200 IPL matches and the leading wicket-taker among pacers in the tournament's history.
