Berlin, April 2 (NationPress) In a remarkable turn of events, third-division team Arminia Bielefeld achieved a stunning upset on Tuesday by defeating reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen 2-1, thus securing their inaugural spot in the German Cup final.

Initially, Leverkusen seemed to have the upper hand when Jonathan Tah volleyed in Amine Adli's corner in the 17th minute. However, Bielefeld remained undeterred. Just three minutes later, Marius Worl capitalized on a loose ball and calmly slotted it past goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky to equalize.

The underdogs struck once more right before halftime. A well-placed free kick from Louis Oppie found Maximilian Grosser at the back post, whose precise volley sent the home fans into a frenzy.

In the second half, Leverkusen brought on forwards Victor Boniface and Patrik Schick, but they struggled to penetrate a strong Bielefeld defense. Goalkeeper Jonas Kersken made a crucial fingertip save to deny Boniface's header, and Schick's late attempt narrowly missed the post.

“We are incredibly proud of the team,” remarked Mitch Kniat, head coach of Arminia Bielefeld. “Reaching the final in Berlin is a dream come true for us. We defended with passion, and taking the lead just before halftime was fantastic. Overall, it's a well-deserved victory.”

Leverkusen midfielder Robert Andrich admitted, “It’s difficult to pinpoint what went wrong today. We must acknowledge that Bielefeld earned their place in the final. We simply couldn't find a breakthrough.”

Having already eliminated Union Berlin, Freiburg, and Werder Bremen, Bielefeld is set to face either Stuttgart or RB Leipzig in the final.
