Costa Navarino (Greece), March 20 (NationPress) The sport of boxing has officially been added to the lineup for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games (LA28) after a unanimous decision by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) during their 144th Session meeting on Thursday.
This decision follows a proposal put forth by the IOC Executive Board (EB) after receiving a recommendation from the Olympic Programme Commission, as well as the provisional recognition of World Boxing as the governing International Federation (IF) for boxing within the Olympic Movement.
IOC President Thomas Bach expressed gratitude for the restoration of boxing in the Olympic programme, stating, "I thank you for the approval of having boxing back in the Olympic programme. We can look forward to a great boxing tournament."
Initially, boxing was omitted from the LA28 sports programme approved by the IOC Session in February 2022, due to ongoing concerns regarding the then-IF for boxing, the International Boxing Association (IBA). Following the withdrawal of recognition from the IBA on June 22, 2023, boxing's inclusion in the LA28 programme was placed on hold.
Last month, the IOC granted recognition to World Boxing as the new governing body for boxing, paving the way for its inclusion in the upcoming Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028.
During the most recent Olympic Games held in Paris, the boxing competition and its qualifying tournaments were managed by the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit, a special task force established by the IOC EB following the IBA's withdrawal of recognition, aimed at ensuring athlete participation and creating a clear, fair, and transparent qualification pathway for boxers.
Boxing has been a part of the modern Olympic Games since 1904, with the exception of the Stockholm 1912 Games, where a local law prohibited the sport.
