Harare, July 25 (NationPress) New Zealand's all-rounder Michael Bracewell has been appointed as the substitute for the injured Glenn Phillips for the opening Test against Zimbabwe.
Phillips sustained his injury during the Major League Cricket (MLC) final. Upon his arrival in Zimbabwe, a thorough assessment revealed that he would need several weeks for rehabilitation.
Bracewell, who was initially overlooked for the squad due to his commitments with The Hundred coinciding with the two-Test series in Bulawayo, is set to make his return to the BlackCaps red-ball team for the first time since 2023.
The 34-year-old cricketer last participated in a Test match during Sri Lanka's tour of New Zealand in 2023. After the first Test, he will depart Zimbabwe to join the Southern Brave for their upcoming game.
Since making his Test debut in 2022, Bracewell has tallied 24 wickets and 259 runs from eight matches. Rob Walter, the head coach of New Zealand, expressed confidence in Bracewell as a suitable replacement for Phillips.
“Glenn’s injury has opened a slot in the Test squad, and Michael serves as a strong like-for-like replacement. His experience and skill set will greatly enhance our team balance,” stated Walter.
Following the conclusion of the T20I tri-nation series, which features South Africa, Zimbabwe, and New Zealand in Harare, the latter two teams will engage in a two-Test series in Bulawayo commencing on July 30.
“Given his presence with the T20 squad and his availability for the first Test, we are seizing the opportunity to integrate him into the squad. We will assess after the first Test whether we will make changes for the second,” Walter added.
