Johannesburg, Sep 8 (NationPress) South Africa wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Rickelton has predicted that young talent Dewald Brevis will be among the most sought-after players in the upcoming auction for Season 4 of SA20, scheduled for Tuesday. With over 500 players on the auction list, the six franchises will finalize their 19-member teams prior to the tournament commencing on December 26.
"Without a doubt, Dewald Brevis is going to garner significant attention. I anticipate Aiden Markram will also be a key contender, but Brevis is likely to steal the spotlight," Rickelton stated as reported by the tournament on Monday.
As the all-time leading run-scorer in SA20, having amassed 1,012 runs for MI Cape Town over the first three seasons, Rickelton expressed his enthusiasm about the team's assembly during the upcoming auction.
"It will be thrilling to see the athlete pool in the auction, but I'm particularly eager to learn how our team will take shape. This is a fantastic chance for players to secure contracts and possibly shift to a new franchise, but I am primarily interested in our final squad's structure," he remarked.
The left-handed batter dominated the tournament’s batting statistics in season two, scoring 530 runs in 10 matches, with a top score of 98. He followed this impressive performance with 336 runs from eight matches in season three, demonstrating his reliability at the top of the batting order.
"I believe my playing style is well-aligned with the demands of SA20, and I am constantly striving to adapt to the evolving trends of the tournament. Understanding South African conditions provides us with an advantage; we must sometimes accelerate the pace of T20, and other times we need to decelerate. Mastering these variations is essential for achieving success," he added.
"My goal is to maintain the consistency I've displayed in previous seasons and establish a strong start. That's my role—to provide a solid beginning. Generally, our lower middle-order has been explosive, and I am confident they will remain so, so if I can lay a strong foundation, my job is accomplished," he continued.
Rickelton expressed particular enthusiasm about playing alongside West Indies batting sensation Nicholas Pooran in the upcoming season. "I’m particularly excited to team up with Nicholas Pooran at MI Cape Town; he’s an outstanding T20 player, and it will be fantastic to learn from him,” he noted.
“I always relish the matches against the Joburg Super Kings at the Wanderers. Not only is it my home ground, but it’s consistently a thrilling contest, whether it's a packed Wanderers or Newlands.
With SA20 taking place during South Africa’s festive season, Rickelton anticipates an electric atmosphere at the tournament kick-off. "This will be an unparalleled experience for us; it’s distinct from playing a Boxing Day Test," he said.
“I know Cape Town will be at full capacity for the inaugural game, and the New Year’s Eve match will undoubtedly be something remarkable. It’s beneficial for both players and fans. I’m excited to don the blue jersey and rally support for our team during the opening phase," he concluded.
He emphasized the significance of team cohesion in the forthcoming competition. "Team chemistry is of utmost importance. We lacked this in our first two years, where we finished at the bottom on both occasions. Finding unity and camaraderie within the squad makes a considerable difference, despite bringing players from around the globe for a short tournament. That chemistry translates onto the field, with a stronger desire to play for each other and a greater determination to win than in prior years."
