New Delhi, Oct 9 (NationPress) Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar expressed his views on the management of Jasprit Bumrah's workload, suggesting that he should be given a break for the upcoming second Test against the West Indies, which is scheduled to kick off on Friday in New Delhi.
Nayar also commented on KL Rahul's tactics, Dhruv Jurel's composure, Kuldeep Yadav's influence, Yashasvi Jaiswal's ambition, and the chance presented to Sai Sudharsan.
It's worth noting that selectors have rested Bumrah from the ODIs for the upcoming white-ball tour to Australia and included him only in the T20I squad. In a discussion with JioStar regarding the significance of managing Bumrah's workload, Nayar expressed why he believes he should not participate in the final Test against the Windies.
“I think Bumrah is going to play this Test. Given the selection without Bumrah for the ODI series against Australia, it appears India aims to secure a convincing win in this Test against the West Indies, which is crucial for the WTC. Personally, I think Bumrah should be rested as he’s incredibly valuable. Following this series, there's another Test series and then the T20 World Cup. I hope he gets some rest, but it seems he will play this match,” he stated.
Rahul scored a century in the first Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and is keen to replicate that success. Nayar remarked, “KL Rahul is familiar with the Delhi pitch and has amassed over 500 runs in the IPL. The most significant change in him is not technical but in his mindset; he’s now playing with greater intent. Even though he scored a century after nine years, he looked dissatisfied, knowing he could have scored 150–200. That hunger is relentless. Once KL starts, he continues.”
In addition to Rahul, Jurel also achieved a century against the Caribbean team. Nayar believes that the wicketkeeper-batter is ‘destined for Test cricket’ and commended his method of scoring runs.
“There are numerous players in India who score runs, but the manner in which those runs are made is crucial. In the first match, Dhruv Jurel impressed everyone with his skill and technique. He made one believe he was born for Test cricket. When you score runs aesthetically, a 60, 70, or 80 builds your confidence and that of everyone around you,” Nayar commented.
Kuldeep made a significant impact by taking wickets in both innings, claiming two wickets each as India triumphed by an innings and 140 runs.
“Kuldeep enjoys playing in Delhi. His IPL career notably advanced here. The skid he generates makes him more effective on this pitch. He needs to make an impression this Test season and in the forthcoming matches against South Africa. Any foreign team visiting India should see Kuldeep Yadav in action,” Nayar added.
In the only innings India played, Jaiswal couldn't deliver a notable performance, scoring just 36 runs off 54 balls. Despite looking in good form with seven boundaries, he failed to convert his innings into a substantial score. Nayar believes that the young player will be eager to excel in the second game and has faith in his abilities.
“In my opinion, Jaiswal will score the most runs in this Test. He’s that type of player; once he gets going, he’s unstoppable. He didn’t score big in the first Test, so he’ll be eager to make a mark. He’s witnessed others performing well and must be thinking that in the next five days, he’ll deliver a big innings,” Nayar stated.
Sai Sudharsan also had a disappointing outing. Despite the selectors' support, the top-order batter had another opportunity to display his skills but managed only seven runs off 19 deliveries before departing.
Commenting on the chances afforded to the batter, Nayar remarked, “Sai Sudharsan won’t find a better opportunity than this. The pitch promises good batting conditions with minimal bounce. It’s a fast outfield and a compact ground, so if he fails to score now, questions will undoubtedly arise. Particularly with Dhruv Jurel performing well as a wicketkeeper-batsman. When Rishabh Pant returns, Sudharsan’s position may come under scrutiny. He understands how crucial this innings is for him and will aim to capitalize on it.”
India and the West Indies will face off at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi for the second and final Test of the series.
