Aakash Chopra: Jasprit Bumrah is MI's Key Wicket-Taker in IPL 2026
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 16 (NationPress) Aakash Chopra, the former Indian opener, asserts that pace sensation Jasprit Bumrah is a consistent match-winner for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2026. However, he cautioned that the five-time Indian Premier League champions are confronted with a challenging task of integrating their diverse overseas talent into the playing eleven.
Bumrah had an impressive season in IPL 2025, taking 18 wickets in 12 matches with an average of 17.56 and an economy rate of 6.68. MI's campaign will commence on March 29 at their home ground, the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, against the three-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Last season, MI reached Qualifier 2 but fell short against the eventual runners-up, Punjab Kings.
"When you're Jasprit Bumrah, the pressure is inherent. He is the type of bowler who makes an impact in every match, ensures wickets, and restricts the opposition's scoring. This immense responsibility adds significant pressure because his four overs are invaluable for MI. He bowls one over in the powerplay, one during the middle overs, and two in the death overs.
“That pressure tied to Bumrah is unrelenting. Regardless of how well Boult performs or the fitness of Deepak Chahar, Bumrah's role remains pivotal. If Boult is fit, MI will undoubtedly want him in the lineup, capitalizing on his ability to swing the new ball alongside Chahar.
“While Shardul Thakur could step in for Chahar, that doesn’t mean he’ll take his place permanently. A fit Chahar, along with Boult, Bumrah, and Hardik Pandya, would ideally form MI's frontline pacers. Corbin Bosch is also available and is a capable all-rounder. However, MI can’t field all their overseas players," Chopra explained during an interview on JioStar.
He also emphasized that Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock should continue their successful opening partnership, yet fitting Will Jacks, Sherfane Rutherford, and Bosch into the lineup alongside the international bowlers presents a delightful dilemma.
"MI favors their left-right combination at the top. I expect to see Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock opening the innings. This duo was instrumental in securing the trophy in both 2019 and 2020. The challenge is integrating Will Jacks into the team. Does he fit the strategy?
“Then there’s Sherfane Rutherford, who is a valuable asset batting lower down and adds another bowling option. However, Will Jacks has demonstrated his capabilities throughout the T20 World Cup for England. This is a rich problem for MI, but a good one to have.
“Additionally, they need at least two overseas bowlers in the lineup. Trent Boult is guaranteed to play, and they must choose between Mitchell Santner and Allah Ghazanfar. Plus, Corbin Bosch is an option too. It’s a challenging situation, but one that most teams would envy. MI must now find a way to resolve this conundrum," he concluded.
