New Delhi, June 6 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has emphasized the importance of fielding Jasprit Bumrah in the most demanding conditions during the upcoming five-match Test series against England. He argues that employing this tactic could provide the visitors with a significant advantage over their opponents.
Bumrah will not feature in all five Tests of the England tour commencing on June 20, as he is managing his workload following a back injury that sidelined him for nearly four months after the fifth Test against Australia in January.
“It’s enticing to utilize him in more challenging conditions—because in tough situations, you want your top players. Just as you would want Kohli during a critical chase, Bumrah is essential in bowler-friendly environments. The Oval and Birmingham will pose greater challenges,” Chopra noted on JioHotstar.
“The pitches tend to be flatter, necessitating highly experienced bowlers. Ultimately, the decision will hinge on how Bumrah's body is reacting. If it were my choice, I’d deploy him in the most difficult scenarios—because that’s where he provides the greatest advantage,” he added.
Chopra also expressed concern regarding the uncertainty surrounding the Indian team’s batting and bowling line-ups, particularly after captain Shubman Gill and coach Gautam Gambhir indicated that decisions would be made once they arrive in England and begin their preparations for the series in Leeds.
“Currently, there’s a feeling of uncertainty, especially during this transitional phase. If the playing XI were fully confirmed, you could rely on your first-choice players. However, that’s not the case. The top order remains under question, particularly the No. 3 and No. 4 slots. I doubt Shubman Gill will occupy the No. 4 position,” he stated.
“These questions will be clarified in the side games. Moreover, the No. 6 position is another concern. In the first match (England Lions vs India A), Karun Nair batted at No. 3 and performed well, but I believe No. 6 may suit him better,” Chopra elaborated.
“I think Nitish Kumar Reddy deserves a spot in the playing XI. Ravindra Jadeja will certainly be one of the spinners. However, I cannot compromise on my bowling. If I select Jadeja, Reddy, and Nair, I’m left with only three frontline bowlers, which isn’t sufficient,” he continued.
Chopra went on to share his vision of what India’s ideal playing eleven should be. “I would choose Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, and Sai Sudharsan as openers, with Shubman Gill at No. 4, followed by Rishabh Pant and Nitish Kumar Reddy at No. 6.
“For all-rounders, I’d select Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur. Shardul is more of a bowler who can bat rather than a batter who bowls—he’s a genuine bowling alternative. Then, for pace, I would go with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna.
As the Indian team embarks on their first series following the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Chopra concluded by noting that the Gill-led squad will encounter different pressures in England compared to previous visiting teams.
“Expectations will heighten the challenge. However, with a new team, there’s some leeway. People perceive this as a youthful squad, and with that comes a longer rope. If you expect them to win every time, you’re not being realistic. The pressure is still present—but it differs from what an experienced team faces, where the only expectation is to win,” he remarked.
