Lahore, Feb 27 (NationPress) England's captain Jos Buttler has acknowledged that the scrutiny on his team's leadership in white-ball cricket will intensify after their premature exit from the ICC Champions Trophy. He stated that he must "consider all possibilities" regarding the future of his captaincy.

England faced a narrow defeat against Afghanistan by eight runs on Wednesday night, leading to their exit from the ICC Champions Trophy. This marks the second consecutive men's ODI tournament where they have failed to progress to the top four.

“The results aren't meeting expectations, and I need to evaluate whether I am part of the problem or part of the solution,” Buttler quoted by ICC expressed. “We need to elevate our performance as a team back to where England cricket should be in white-ball formats.”

While Buttler has confirmed he will contemplate his future as captain in the upcoming days, England is set to wrap up their Champions Trophy campaign against South Africa on Saturday, a team aiming to secure their place in the semi-finals.

“I will take some time to reflect on what I believe is appropriate. I won't make any emotional decisions right now. The burden of results is heavy, and you aspire to lead a winning team. Unfortunately, we haven't achieved that recently, which brings about challenging times,” he added.

Former West Indies fast bowler Ian Bishop shared the view that there might be questions regarding England's leadership. “They must perform better than this. Leadership may now be under review, considering their historical performance since 2019. The talent is evident, but they are not utilizing it effectively, which could imply a need for a change in leadership,” Bishop noted.
