Karachi, Feb 28 (NationPress) England's captain, Jos Buttler, has made the decision to resign from his role as the leader of the white-ball squad following the match against South Africa on Saturday, which will conclude England's participation in the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025. After suffering defeats to both Australia and Afghanistan, England has been eliminated from the tournament.
Buttler took over from Eoin Morgan in June 2022, leading the team to victory in the T20 World Cup in Australia later that same year. The 34-year-old revealed his decision during a pre-game press conference on Friday. "I am stepping down as the captain of England; it’s the best choice for both myself and the team. I hope someone else can come in and collaborate with Baz to guide the team to where it should be.
“It’s evident that this tournament was crucial concerning my captaincy, and with two losses leading to our exit, compounded by previous tournament challenges, I feel I've reached the end of the line in my role. It’s saddening, and I feel a sense of loss. I was looking forward to collaborating with Brendon (McCullum) to move the team forward, but since that hasn't materialized, I believe now is the right moment for a transition,” Buttler stated.
In the last two years, England has struggled to perform at their usual level in ICC tournaments, highlighting the necessity for change. They faced elimination from the 2023 ODI World Cup after finishing seventh in the league stage, followed by a semi-final defeat to India in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
The 2025 Champions Trophy marked the beginning of the Brendon McCullum era for the English team, but the early exit prompted Buttler’s decision to resign.
He expressed his feelings of ‘disappointment and sadness’ but remains hopeful of returning to enjoying the game without the burden of captaincy.
“There’s a measure of disappointment and melancholy, yet I’m confident it will fade with time, allowing me to enjoy my cricket again. I will also take time to reflect on the immense honor it has been to lead my country,” he concluded.
