Manchester, Feb 17 (NationPress) Casemiro, the holding midfielder for Manchester United who transitioned from Real Madrid in 2022, remarked that the Los Blancos' remarkable comeback victory over Manchester City in the initial leg of the UEFA Champions League did not catch him off guard.

During his tenure at Real Madrid, he was part of one of the most formidable midfield trios globally, acting as the midfield anchor that enabled Toni Kroos and Luka Modric to excel in the midfield battleground. With an impressive five titles in Europe’s premier cup competition under his belt, the Brazilian midfielder has firsthand knowledge of what elevates the Spanish side to one of the best in the world.

“It didn’t surprise me. Madrid consistently performs at this level and their history speaks volumes about their capabilities. Madrid always fights until the end and never backs down.

“Even when down 2-1, I recognized there was still much to contest. And that’s against City and a brilliant coach like Guardiola. Yet, they achieved it. Furthermore, the return match will be at the Bernabeu with a favorable outcome after the 2-3. Although it won't be straightforward, the Bernabéu during those Champions League evenings is truly unique. I wish all the best to my former teammates, not just because of my rivalry with City, but more so for Madrid. I hope they advance to the last 16,” Casemiro expressed to AS Diario, a Spanish news outlet.

Real Madrid found themselves behind 1-2 during the first leg at Etihad Stadium after a double by Norwegian striker Erling Haaland, but two late goals from Brahim Diaz and Jude Bellingham propelled the reigning European champions to an unexpected win. The two giants are set to clash again for the second leg on Thursday (IST) at Santiago Bernabeu.

Since his transfer to Manchester, Casemiro's prominence has noticeably diminished, as the 32-year-old has faced challenges adapting to the Premier League's intense pace.

Despite being included in Manchester United's squad for 22 out of 25 matches this season, he has only actively participated in 15 league games, starting in 11 and coming off the bench in four.

Regardless of everything, Casemiro remains ‘thankful’ to the Red Devils and aspires to fulfill the remainder of his one-and-a-half-year contract.

“I must continue my efforts with utmost respect and professionalism. Naturally, I wish to play more; I don't know any player who wouldn’t want to contribute. I also wish to assist the club during this phase. I handle everything with respect for my teammates and the coaching staff.

“Most importantly, I value United, a club to which I am deeply appreciative. I have a year and a half left on my contract and hope to complete it here in Manchester. I feel comfortable here, and my family is also settled. We communicate in English. I am very thankful to the Old Trafford supporters and the club. I feel fulfilled at the club level. Happy on the bench? Certainly not. That’s a different story,” he concluded.
