Manchester, Feb 17 (NationPress) Casemiro, the Manchester United holding midfielder who transitioned from Real Madrid in 2022, expressed that the comeback victory by Los Blancos against Manchester City in the initial leg of the UEFA Champions League did not catch him off guard.

Having been part of one of the most formidable midfield trios globally at Real Madrid, he fulfilled the role of the midfield pivot, allowing Toni Kroos and Luka Modric to assert their dominance in the center of the pitch. The Brazilian has celebrated five victories in Europe's top club tournament with Real Madrid and possesses firsthand knowledge of what elevates the Spanish squad to one of the finest in the world.

“I wasn’t shocked. Madrid consistently pulls through, and everyone recognizes the legacy of this team and its potential. Madrid continually rises to the occasion and never surrenders.

“Even while down 2-1, I anticipated there was still much to contend with. This is City, backed by a remarkable coach like Guardiola. Yet, they managed it. Moreover, the return match will be at the Bernabeu with a favorable outcome after the 2-3. It won't be straightforward, but the Bernabéu is incredibly special on those Champions League nights. I wish all the best to my former teammates, not just due to rivalry with City but more so for Madrid. I hope they advance to the last 16,” Casemiro remarked to AS Diario, a Spanish publication.

In the first leg at the Etihad Stadium, Real Madrid found themselves trailing 1-2 after a stunning brace by Erling Haaland, the Norwegian striker. However, two late goals from Brahim Diaz and Jude Bellingham propelled the defending European champions to an unexpected win. The two elite teams are set to clash again for the second leg on Thursday (IST) at Santiago Bernabeu.

Since arriving at Manchester, Casemiro's star has somewhat dimmed, as the 32-year-old has faced challenges keeping pace with the fast tempo of the Premier League.

Despite being included in the matchday squad for 22 of the 25 matches played thus far, he has participated in only 15 league games this season, starting in 11 and coming off the bench in four.

Regardless of the circumstances, Casemiro remains 'thankful' to the Red Devils and aspires to continue playing for the team throughout the duration of his year-and-a-half contract.
