Did Francisco Cerundolo Capture His First ATP Tour Title at the Argentina Open?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Buenos Aires, Feb 16 (NationPress) Francisco Cerundolo, the top seed and a beloved local figure, claimed his fourth ATP title by defeating Italy's Luciano Darderi with a score of 6-4, 6-2 in the final of the Argentina Open.
Having been a runner-up in both 2021 and 2025, the homegrown talent demonstrated composure during a tense final set, where nearly every game, except for two, included at least one break point. This victory marks not only his fourth ATP Tour trophy but also his inaugural win on Argentine soil.
Although Cerundolo faced some challenges with his serve, he excelled at the baseline, concluding the match in one hour and 37 minutes on the outdoor clay courts of the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club.
The 27-year-old player secured early breaks against Darderi in both sets, ultimately clinching the victory with a signature inside-out forehand.
"This is the pinnacle of my career thus far," Cerundolo remarked, reflecting on his previous losses in two finals at this ATP 250 event.
"Winning in my hometown, surrounded by family and friends, felt surreal. I had doubts whether this day would arrive, but I delivered one of my best performances today."
"I maintained an aggressive approach and ensured he couldn't dictate the match at any moment. In a final, you must seize every opportunity, and I fought for every point here," he added.
Despite a strong showing, Darderi won 73% of his first serve points but struggled with just 24% on his second serve, accumulating 29 unforced errors.
Ranked No. 19 in the ATP Rankings, Cerundolo is now the seventh home champion in the history of the Argentina Open, which commenced in 2001. He has achieved a remarkable 46 victories on clay since the beginning of the 2024 season, surpassing Darderi by two.
Even though Darderi fell short of his fifth ATP Tour title, he will rise to a career-high No. 21 in the world rankings, while Cerundolo retains his position at No. 19.
