New Delhi, April 7 (NationPress) Charlotte Edwards, who has recently assumed the position of England women’s head coach, has made the decision to resign from her franchise T20 coaching roles at Mumbai Indians and Sydney Sixers, along with her commitments to Hampshire and Southern Brave, to concentrate on her duties within the national team.
Since her retirement as a player in 2017, Charlotte, the former captain of England, has enjoyed substantial success in coaching. She secured two titles within three seasons with the Mumbai Indians in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), the most recent of which was achieved this year at Brabourne Stadium.
She also claimed five championships with Southern Vipers, including two in the Charlotte Edwards Cup, a domestic T20 tournament named in her honor. During her tenure, Southern Brave triumphed in the Women’s Hundred in 2023 and reached the finals on three occasions, in addition to guiding Sydney Sixers to the WBBL final in the 2022/23 season.
The Mumbai Indians expressed deep respect and admiration for Charlotte, stating, “Charlotte Edwards has been a leader for whom the entire #OneFamily has great appreciation.”
“The remarkable achievements that Charlotte has driven the team toward, winning 2 titles in 3 years, inspiring the players to excel and continuing the MI legacy, have brought joy to the MI Paltan.”
“We wish her the very best and are thankful for everything she has contributed to our team over the past three years,” remarked a spokesperson from the franchise on Monday.
In an emotional Instagram post on Monday, Charlotte conveyed her gratitude to the teams she coached before taking on the role of head coach for England.
“It’s been quite a week… so many emotions and I’ve been incredibly touched by all the supportive messages I've received from everyone. I feel the need to express my thanks myself.”
“To @hantscricket for the opportunity presented to me 8 years ago to be part of this amazing club. I will always consider this place my home and will treasure the beautiful memories made during that time. Thank you to the players, staff, and fans for your unwavering support over the years.”
“Thank you @sixersbbl, @southernbrave, and @mumbaiindians. These three outstanding franchises allowed me to be a part of their journey. You have all played a significant role in my development as a coach over these past three years, and I want to extend my deepest gratitude to all the players, staff, and fans who made this experience so enjoyable.”
“It’s the people that make it so special, and I’ve been fortunate to work with so many wonderful individuals who will now be lifelong friends. The next challenge... Coaching @englandcricket is a dream come true, and I’m eager to get started,” she shared.
Charlotte’s first challenge as England’s head coach will be the home series against the West Indies in May, followed by a white-ball tour to India, with announcements regarding the new captain expected soon.
She will also need to focus on restoring England's morale ahead of the ODI World Cup in India later this year and a T20 World Cup on home soil in 2026, particularly after experiencing a 16-0 defeat in the Women’s Ashes in Australia.
