Sydney, May 9 (NationPress) Matthew Mott is poised to step into the role of head coach for the Sydney Sixers' WBBL team this summer, taking over from Charlotte Edwards while simultaneously serving as the assistant coach for the men's BBL team under Greg Shipperd.
This appointment signifies Mott's return to the realm of women's cricket, over three years after he concluded his successful tenure as the head coach of the Australian women's cricket team.
Edwards stepped down last month to assume the position of head coach for England Women. On Friday, the Sixers officially announced Mott's hiring on a two-year contract.
Currently in India as the assistant coach for the IPL team Delhi Capitals, the 51-year-old has been involved in the franchise circuit since his exit as England's men's white-ball head coach after a lackluster period following the 2022 T20 World Cup.
This summer, he will also take charge of the Seattle Orcas in the Major League Cricket, a team co-owned by GMR, which is the parent group of Delhi Capitals.
During his tenure with the Australian women's team, Mott led them to victory in the T20 World Cups of 2018 and 2020, as well as the ODI World Cup in 2022. He later guided the England men's team to the T20 World Cup title in 2022 but was dismissed after a series of poor results.
Mott has a long-standing relationship with Cricket New South Wales, having coached their men's team from 2007 to 2011.
“I’m truly thrilled to be joining the Sixers women’s team. I have maintained a strong connection with the club over the years, so when this opportunity arose, I was eager to embrace it,” Mott stated.
“Having previously coached several players in the current squad, I am excited to reconnect with them and work alongside some emerging talents as we aim for another WBBL title. The roster is already brimming with talent, featuring players who have excelled at various levels. We intend to enhance that at the Draft and position ourselves to reclaim the championship this season,” he added.
General Manager Rachael Haynes commended his qualifications, emphasizing his ability to foster a “strong, winning culture” and deliver a “world-class approach” to the team.
“Few coaches in global cricket have a comparable track record of success, and ‘Motty’ has demonstrated that he understands what it takes to cultivate a winning culture. He was an outstanding addition to our men's coaching team last season, and we are delighted that he will continue to support the BBL side under Greg Shipperd’s leadership.
“As a club, we strive for excellence in all our endeavors, from our match day experience to our on-field performances, and we eagerly anticipate seeing Motty bring that same world-class approach to our program over the next two years,” she remarked.
The Sydney Sixers have not secured a WBBL title since the 2017-18 season and finished in sixth place last year. They will hold the first pick in the upcoming WBBL draft.
