Is There Any Cause for Concern About Abhishek's Form in T20 WC?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 18 (NationPress) Former Indian spinner Piyush Chawla has come to the defense of young opener Abhishek Sharma, who is facing challenges in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026. Chawla described Sharma as a player who adopts a high-risk, high-reward style of play. Abhishek has participated in two matches during the tournament but has yet to make a significant impact, having been dismissed for a duck in both innings. Chawla emphasizes that there is no cause for concern regarding the opener's form as India aims to defend their title.
"Honestly, there’s nothing to be anxious about. Over the past 18 months, we’ve witnessed Abhishek’s capabilities. He is the type of batter who takes risks, and patience is key with such players," Chawla stated during an interview with Jio Hotstar.
As a bowler, Chawla noted that the margin for error against Sharma is minimal. "When the ball is in the sweet spot, he has a low strike rate. This is likely because bowlers often seek swing with a new ball. However, once the ball ages, his strike rate significantly increases," he elaborated.
India has successfully advanced to the Super 8s and is set to face the Netherlands in their final group stage match on Wednesday. Chawla suggested a potential adjustment to India’s playing XI for this match.
"Currently, it’s about selecting players suited for the conditions. Having played on a spinning wicket in Sri Lanka, Arshdeep may return, requiring Kuldeep Yadav to sit out. I expect just one change for this game, although Kuldeep is undoubtedly a quality bowler," he mentioned.
Chawla did not foresee additional changes, asserting that all players in the squad are of high caliber and prepared to step in when necessary, eliminating the need for experimentation.
Additionally, the 37-year-old former spinner discussed Suryakumar Yadav’s shift in approach, which has aided the skipper in regaining his form after a challenging period.
"It’s a deliberate choice for Surya to take his time at the start. Before the New Zealand series, he had not scored runs, leading to discussions about his form. However, he made a strong comeback in that series, ensuring he paced himself since he can elevate his strike rate quickly. After 30 to 40 balls, he can still maintain a strike rate of 180," he explained.
