London, Feb 27 (NationPress) Erling Haaland netted the sole goal, allowing Manchester City to enhance their chances for a top-four finish with a 1-0 victory against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday (IST).
Following Sunday's defeat to Liverpool, the previous season's Premier League champions found themselves trailing the leaders by 20 points, and Chelsea's resounding 4-0 win over Southampton on Tuesday pushed City out of the top four.
However, Pep Guardiola's squad delivered a commanding first-half display in north London, culminating in Haaland's tap-in upon his return from injury, marking his 20th Premier League goal of the season.
This achievement makes him only the second player to hit that milestone in each of his first three seasons in the league, following Ruud van Nistelrooy, who accomplished this for Manchester United from 2001/02 to 2003/04, according to Premier League reports.
Haaland thought he had added a second in the dying moments with a strike past Guglielmo Vicario, but it was disallowed for handball.
City had opportunities to secure a more comfortable lead in the first half but had to battle hard for the clean sheet and the three points as the hosts improved after halftime.
This hard-fought victory propels City back into the top four of the Premier League with 11 matches remaining, while Spurs remain in 13th place with 33 points.
Guardiola remarked, “We were better in the first and they were better in the second. 1-0, 2-0, 3-0 should have been the score due to the chances we created. In the second half, we suffered but should have secured the win in the first. For Champions League qualification, this was an exceptional result for us.”
After the defeat, Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou commented, “In the first half, we needed to endure and created a few chances but were wasteful with our possession. In the second half, we dominated all areas but failed to score. We always anticipated a strong finish, but we turned the ball over too often in the first half, allowing City to find their rhythm.”
