Former Australia captain Michael Clarke has revealed he narrowly escaped serious injury in a road accident on the way to the airport following the IPL 2026 final in Ahmedabad, describing the ordeal as a 'frightening experience' that left the front of his vehicle lodged beneath a semi-trailer. Clarke, who was part of the commentary panel for the tournament, escaped with bruises, though his driver reportedly sustained a suspected leg fracture.

What Happened on the Road

Clarke was travelling as a passenger and had fallen asleep when the collision occurred. Speaking on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast, he recounted waking to find the front half of the car wedged under a large truck. 'I was asleep. I fell asleep after the game, travelling. Obviously, I wasn't driving. Then I woke up to virtually the front half of the car being under a truck,' Clarke said. His driver reportedly told him the truck's brake lights were not functioning, causing the car to run into the rear of the semi-trailer at speed. 'The car's certainly written off,' Clarke added.

Driver's Condition and Clarke's Injuries

While Clarke walked away with bruises, he expressed serious concern for his driver. 'I got away with some bruises, but I definitely think he had a little break in his leg. I was really concerned because he was so scared. It wasn't his car; he works for the company,' Clarke said. The driver's condition has not been independently confirmed, and Clarke's account remains the primary source.

Clarke credited Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials for their swift and sustained response following the incident. 'Everyone at the BCCI, everybody there, they've been checking in on him, and they've been checking in on me. They've been unreal. So I'm very grateful for that,' he said. The former World Cup-winning captain described the people he encountered in India as a key reason he made it home safely, opening his podcast account with: 'Let me start by saying thank God for good people in India.'

Clarke's Perspective on the Shock

Clarke emphasised that the psychological impact of the accident — waking from sleep to find himself centimetres from being crushed — was as significant as the physical one. 'It was a complete accident. These things happen all the time, but for me it was more the shock because I was fast asleep and then woke up to see myself so close to being underneath a truck,' he said.
