Charlotte, June 25 (NationPress) Benfica clinched the top position in Group C of the FIFA Club World Cup after achieving a slim 1-0 victory against Bayern Munich in their concluding group match here on Wednesday (IST), thanks to a series of vital saves from goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin.
Having already secured their place in the last 16 following consecutive victories against Auckland City and Boca Juniors, Bayern only required a draw to top the group. Head coach Vincent Kompany opted for a significant rotation, making seven alterations to the starting squad. Key players Harry Kane, Michael Olise, Kingsley Coman, and Joshua Kimmich started on the bench, while 19-year-old summer recruit Tom Bischof from Hoffenheim made his debut.
Benfica took the lead in the 13th minute when Andreas Schjelderup found the net from a Fredrik Aursnes cross from the right flank, as reported by Xinhua.
With no attempts on target during the first half, Kompany introduced Kane, Olise, and Kimmich after halftime.
The substitutes made an immediate impact. A long pass from Kimmich set Leroy Sane through on goal, but his shot was blocked by Trubin, who made another critical save to deny Thomas Muller shortly afterward.
Kimmich almost equalized in the 61st minute with a low shot from outside the box; however, Kane was offside while positioned in front of the goalkeeper.
The Bundesliga champions continued to apply pressure but failed to find the equalizer, as Trubin again thwarted Sane from close range just minutes before the final whistle.
Bayern fell to second place in the group after this defeat and will face Group D winners Flamengo in Miami on Sunday in the last-16. Benfica will take on either Chelsea or Esperance de Tunis in Charlotte on Saturday.
The other Group C match between Auckland City and Boca Juniors in Nashville was halted due to potential lightning strikes after Christian Gray scored Auckland City's first goal of the tournament, equalizing the score at 1-1.
