IPL 2026: Connolly Expresses Gratitude for Iyer's Support
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 9 (NationPress) Celebrated as one of the most daring young batting talents within the Punjab Kings (PBKS) organization, Australian all-rounder Cooper Connolly expressed his profound gratitude for the generous praise he received from captain Shreyas Iyer and head coach Ricky Ponting after his sensational start to the season.
Connolly made a remarkable entry into the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 by scoring an unbeaten 72 off 44 balls in his debut match as a number three batsman against the Gujarat Titans in New Chandigarh, earning the Player of the Match honors while successfully leading the team through a challenging chase despite a middle-order stumble.
He followed this performance with a solid 36 against Chennai Super Kings, helping PBKS secure two consecutive victories. “It’s been a wonderful beginning. I hope we can maintain our winning streak and stay at the top of the leaderboard. I had a brief conversation with Shreyas during the Australia vs. India ODI series a couple of months ago, and we exchanged some thoughts,” Connolly mentioned.
“I admire watching him play and learning from him. His kind words about me are greatly appreciated. He’s a world-class player, and I’ll continue striving to improve and contribute my best to this team, hoping to receive ongoing support from this franchise,” he added.
“I aim to contribute to our success, whether with the bat, in the field, or with the ball. I’m focused on putting my best foot forward,” Connolly stated in response to a question from IANS during the JioStar Press Room ahead of the TATA IPL 2026 Rivalry Week.
Despite the accolades for his fearless approach, Connolly admitted feeling a significant amount of nerves before stepping onto the field for his first IPL match. “Sitting on the bench, getting ready, I was quite anxious. That’s where it all began, and I felt a flutter in my stomach from the moment I woke up,” he recounted.
“However, nerves can be a good sign. When I walked out to bat, I was nervous, but as I played, I found my rhythm and became more comfortable, focusing on the game ahead,” he shared.
Connolly, who will function as a specialist batter until late April due to a back issue affecting his left-arm spin bowling, further emphasized how the team culture promoted by Iyer empowers young players to showcase their skills without the fear of failure.
“The positive atmosphere in our group is fantastic, led by our captain, Shreyas. He’s always optimistic and has a saying that he believes we are going to win, which reflects confidence rather than arrogance,” Connolly explained.
“This mindset has become ingrained in our team, and Shreyas leads by example, making him an admirable leader that everyone respects. Players are eager to perform well for him because he genuinely deserves that recognition,” Connolly concluded.
