New Delhi, Sep 26 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif responded thoughtfully to Jasprit Bumrah's recent critique regarding his comments on the fast bowler's workload. Kaif referred to his remarks as a cricketing observation.
On Thursday, Kaif expressed his worries about Bumrah's current role in white-ball cricket. He highlighted that Bumrah has been bowling up to three overs at the beginning during the powerplay, instead of conserving some for the crucial death overs. Kaif believes this strategy could be detrimental, particularly with the Asia Cup 2025 final against Pakistan approaching.
Kaif noted that under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, Bumrah typically bowled in shorter one-over spells. However, this tactic appears to have shifted with Suryakumar Yadav at the helm.
“Bumrah under Rohit would generally bowl overs 1, 13, 17, 19. Under Surya, in the Asia Cup, he bowled a three-over spell at the start. To avoid injury, Bumrah prefers to bowl when his body is warmed up. One over from Bumrah in the remaining 14 overs is a significant advantage for batters; against stronger teams at the World Cup, this could be detrimental to India,” Kaif shared on X.
Bumrah reacted strongly to Kaif's comments, stating, “Inaccurate before inaccurate again.”
In response to the backlash, Kaif clarified that his intention was simply to make a cricketing observation and praised Bumrah as the “biggest match-winner for India.”
“Please consider this as a cricketing observation from a well-wisher and admirer. You are Indian cricket's biggest match-winner, and I understand the dedication required when representing India,” Kaif remarked on Friday.
Bumrah, who has been under scrutiny regarding his fitness and workload management, has taken four wickets in four matches during the Asia Cup.
