Melbourne, Dec 23 (NationPress) Captain Pat Cummins has officially been sidelined for the remainder of the Ashes series after being excluded from Australia’s lineup for the Boxing Day Test. His participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup in February remains uncertain.
After the Adelaide Test, Cummins hinted during his post-match media interaction that he might be rested to manage a persistent back condition.
The fast bowler, who was diagnosed with a lumbar stress reaction following the tour of the West Indies, pushed his rehabilitation limits to come back for the third Test.
He claimed six wickets in the Adelaide Test, helping Australia secure an 82-run victory and retain the Ashes trophy with two matches remaining.
On Tuesday, head coach Andrew McDonald confirmed Cummins’ injury-related absence for the remainder of the Ashes series.
"He won't participate in any further matches of the series. We had a long discussion regarding his return and acknowledged the risks involved. Our objective was to win the series, which we have achieved. We certainly do not want to jeopardize his long-term health," McDonald stated to the press in Melbourne.
"Pat is comfortable with this decision. If there was any setback during his recovery, we would have halted his participation immediately.
"Everything progressed without issues, and I commend him, the medical team, and everyone involved for successfully navigating this risk to get him back, allowing him to take six wickets and secure the Ashes series, which is incredibly rewarding for all involved," he added.
It is yet to be determined if Cummins will be fit for the T20 World Cup scheduled for February. "I can’t provide a definitive answer right now, but we are optimistic," McDonald remarked.
As the T20 World Cup approaches, McDonald noted, "There will be an evaluation. I expect he will undergo a check-up scan soon to gather further insights into his back condition... While we look ahead to the World Cup, I cannot confirm his attendance at this moment. It's still uncertain, but we remain hopeful."
