IPL 2026: Cummins Set to Return for SRH on April 25, Vettori Confirms
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, April 17 (NationPress) Sunrisers Hyderabad's captain, Pat Cummins, is set to rejoin his team on Friday evening, just before their match against Chennai Super Kings. However, he is anticipated to make his on-field return on April 25 against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur, according to head coach Daniel Vettori.
Cummins has been recuperating from a lumbar stress injury and first connected with SRH on March 27, a day prior to their opening game versus Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He traveled with the team for their next match against Kolkata Knight Riders before heading home for a fitness assessment.
Having successfully passed the fitness test in Australia, Cummins is now en route to rejoining SRH. “He's flying today, so he will be with us, I think, this evening. The plan is for the 25th (of April),” Vettori shared during the pre-match press conference on Friday.
During Cummins' absence, SRH took the opportunity to test their pace attack, with promising performances from debutants Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain, both of whom achieved four-wicket hauls against RR at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium earlier this week.
Vettori expressed his satisfaction with their performances but noted the need for potential adjustments based on match conditions. "We’re very, very satisfied with the bowling group’s performance, but we’ll need to reassess conditions for upcoming games," he stated.
“We’re playing on the same pitch as the last game, and considering Hyderabad's extreme heat, the wicket may vary slightly from the last one, necessitating tactical changes."
“9 for 5, that's what truly impressed me. Especially against (Vaibhav) Sooryavanshi and (Yashasvi) Jaiswal, who have been exceptionally successful as an opening pair, it was impressive to see our bowlers go in without fear," he added.
Vettori concluded by expressing confidence in openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head. "Every opening duo aims for an ultra-aggressive strategy, but it’s unrealistic to expect success every time. We want to maintain that approach because when they perform, we typically win. We have a strong batting lineup behind them, ready to step in if the opening pair falters. When they ignite, it’s one of the best partnerships in the league. Other teams employ similar tactics, making it crucial for us to encourage their freedom to play," he remarked.
