IPL 2026: Venugopal Rao Credits David Miller's Expertise for DC's Victory Over RCB
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, April 18 (NationPress) Venugopal Rao, the Director of Cricket for Delhi Capitals, praised the invaluable experience and calm demeanor of David Miller as the pivotal element in securing a six-wicket victory over Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday.
“In a tournament of this magnitude, momentum is key. Today, it was David Miller who brought us home. His experience is always a significant asset. He executed his role exceptionally well,” Venugopal Rao remarked at the post-match briefing.
While chasing a target of 176 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, the Delhi Capitals faced early challenges, falling to 18/3 during the powerplay. However, KL Rahul (57) and Tristan Stubbs (60 not out) formed a crucial 76-run partnership that helped the visitors regain their footing.
Despite this recovery, the match remained evenly balanced as they entered the final over, needing 15 runs. It was at this juncture that Miller's extensive experience in high-pressure situations emerged, as he confidently faced Romario Shepherd. After a few deliveries, the left-hander struck two massive sixes and capped it off with a boundary, clinching the victory with one ball to spare, marking an impressive turnaround for the Delhi Capitals.
Rao also highlighted the significance of the middle-phase partnership, which was essential for their successful chase.
“It boiled down to one strong partnership. RCB’s total was challenging, but I believe the partnership between KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs was vital,” he noted, emphasizing how the duo managed the pressure and restored the innings.
Earlier in the game, the DC bowlers played a crucial role in restricting RCB to a manageable score of 175/8. Rao remarked that understanding the pitch conditions and executing strategies effectively kept the team ahead.
“In day games, the pitch behaves differently and tends to slow down due to the heat. We were ready for that. RCB has been consistently scoring in the range of 220–230, but if you take wickets at crucial moments, any team can feel the heat. That’s what transpired today,” he explained.
Additionally, he commended captain Axar Patel for his all-around contributions, particularly after diligently working to regain his form.
“He has put in a lot of effort. He kept assuring us that it was just a matter of time. Sometimes, when confidence dips, someone needs to step up. That’s where the coach played a role, and he took key wickets, including that of Tim David. He needed that encouragement,” Rao remarked.
This victory places the Delhi Capitals in fourth position on the points table, amassing six points from five matches. After snapping a two-game losing streak, DC aims to build on this momentum as they prepare to face Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on April 21.
