After Tosin Adarabioyo scored with a precise header during first-half stoppage time, Delap netted his first goal with a smooth turn and a well-placed shot. Tyrique George then sealed the victory in the closing moments at the Lincoln Financial Field.
Delap recognized the significance of the match for the Blues, as the win ensured their safe passage to the Round of 16, where they will take on Benfica.
"We knew we had to win tonight to progress, and we’re happy to have completed the task. It’s an exhilarating feeling [to score] and I hope it’s the first of many. I cherish playing football, and representing such a prestigious team is a wonderful experience," Delap stated on Chelsea's official website.
The 22-year-old also expressed gratitude to Enzo Fernandez for the assist that set up his inaugural Chelsea goal. Liam said, "I had a chat with Enzo, and he advised me to make a run when he got the ball, and it was an excellent pass that fortunately found the net."
The Blues will have three days to recover and prepare for the upcoming match against Benfica, scheduled in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Saturday. Delap is eager to challenge himself against the renowned Portuguese club.
He added, "We need to prepare over the next few days. Everyone will come out ready to fight, and hopefully, we’ll advance further in the tournament."
Chelsea commenced their FIFA Club World Cup journey with a 2-0 victory over Los Angeles FC. However, they faced a significant setback with a 1-3 loss against Brazilian team Flamengo, where Nicolas Jackson received a straight red card for a reckless challenge. They are now set to compete against Portuguese side Benfica in the Round of 16, who secured the top position in Group C with a 1-0 victory over Bayern Munich.
