Delhi Half Marathon 2026: Matata breaks course record, Alemu wins women's title
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kenya's Charles Matata shattered the men's course record at the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon (VDHM) 2026 on Sunday, 18 October, clocking 58:52 — one second faster than the previous mark — to claim the elite men's title in the World Athletics Gold Label event. Ethiopia's Wudinesh Alemu secured the women's elite crown in 1:06:35, as nearly 40,000 runners flooded the streets of New Delhi in one of Asia's most prestigious road races.
Matata's Record-Breaking Run
Matata's finishing time also marked a personal best, underlining the dominance he displayed throughout the race. The Kenyan's performance was clinical from the gun, and he was never seriously threatened over the 21.1 km course. Fellow Kenyans Samwel Nyamai Mailu and Stanley Waithaka Mburu completed an all-Kenyan men's podium, finishing second and third respectively.
Alemu Leads Ethiopian Charge
In the women's elite category, Alemu's winning margin was underlined by compatriot Selah Businei finishing second, while Kenya's Cynthia Chelangat Chepkwony took third place. The result continued Ethiopia's strong record in the women's race at this event.
Indian Elite Honours
On the domestic front, Shailesh Kushwaha and Ankita Dhyani claimed the men's and women's Indian elite titles respectively, delivering strong performances in front of a passionate home crowd.
Star-Studded Flag-Off and Mass Participation
The races were flagged off by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, alongside Arun Misra, CEO of Vedanta Group, and Vice Admiral Atul Anand. The dignitaries launched multiple categories, including the elite and mass-participation half marathons, Police Cup, Champions with Disability, Senior Citizens Run, Open 10K, and Great Delhi Run. Boxing legend Mary Kom, badminton Paralympic champion Pramod Bhagat, and tennis star Mahesh Bhupathi also attended in support of the event.
Run For Zero Hunger: 50 Lakh Meals This Year
Beyond the athletics, the 2026 edition continued the event's flagship #RunForZeroHunger initiative. Participants collectively contributed 50 lakh meals this year, pushing the cumulative total across five editions to more than 2.7 crore meals — marking five years of Vedanta's association with the marathon. Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Non-Executive Director at Vedanta and Chairperson of Hindustan Zinc Ltd., said: 'With 40,000 runners taking to the streets, the Delhi Half Marathon celebrated sporting excellence, personal determination and the power of collective action. From elite athletes to first-time runners, every participant demonstrated how sport can inspire us to go further for ourselves and others.' With the course record now reset and mass participation at a high, the 2026 edition sets a fresh benchmark for India's premier road race.
