Dubai, Jan 26 (NationPress) Emerging South African talent Annerie Dercksen has been awarded the ICC Emerging Women’s Cricketer of the Year for 2024, triumphing over a competitive field to earn this esteemed recognition.

Dercksen donned the green and gold for the first time in January 2023 during the T20I triangular series involving India and the West Indies, and has since made remarkable strides.

In her inaugural year, the 23-year-old appeared in five T20Is, but she truly established her presence in international cricket in 2024, the year she made her Test and ODI debuts.

While 2023 was about familiarizing herself with the format, the all-rounder truly flourished in 2024, making a significant mark on the global stage.

Dercksen exhibited remarkable poise with the bat, proving her ability to both rebuild an innings and steer a chase when necessary. Notably, she contributed a crucial 27 runs in South Africa's sole victory during the limited-overs series against England late in 2024.

As a medium pacer, she claimed 11 wickets, solidifying her status as a genuine all-rounder.

Dercksen played a key role in South Africa’s impressive campaign at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, where the Proteas reached the final but fell to New Zealand.

She maintained an average of 32.2 in T20Is, rescuing South Africa from challenging situations, and demonstrated her ability to accelerate despite starting the year in lower-order positions before transitioning to the middle-order.

Her bowling was also effective, with five wickets, including a personal best of 2-5 against Sri Lanka during a dominant home victory in March.

In the ODI format, Dercksen further impressed with a career-best of 3-16 against England in the first match.

Her Test performances were similarly noteworthy, with her highest score being 41 in Bloemfontein, where she partnered for a crucial 92-run stand for the second wicket.

Leading up to the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, she had limited opportunities in the T20I series against Pakistan but made a significant impact.

In the series-deciding match, facing a challenging target of 154, Dercksen stepped up after early setbacks, scoring an unbeaten 44 off just 23 balls, including six fours and two gigantic sixes, against seasoned bowlers Nida Dar and Sadia Iqbal.

Her explosive performance propelled South Africa to a series-clinching victory, earning her the Player of the Match title.
