Will Desai-Ghorpade Bring Home a Title for India at the WTT Star Contender?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Feb 14 (NationPress) The fourth-seeded duo of Harmeet Desai and Yashaswini Ghorpade have emerged as India's only hope for a title as they advanced to the mixed doubles final of the WTT Star Contender Chennai 2026 at the Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University this past Saturday.
Dominating their all-Indian mixed doubles semifinal, Desai and Ghorpade triumphed over the wildcards Payas Jain and Syndrella Das with a convincing score of 3-0 (11-9, 11-6, 11-9). The event, co-hosted by Ultimate Table Tennis and the Sharath Kamal Academy, is backed by SAI, TTFI, and SDAT.
Now, the Indian pair is set to compete against the second seeds Eduard Ionescu and Bernadette Szocs from Romania, who progressed after the third-seeded duo of Oh Junsung from Korea and Miku Nagasaki from Japan withdrew while trailing 1-2.
In the men’s doubles, the unseeded French team of Flavien Coton and Thibault Poret were declared champions without having to play a point in the final due to Oh Junsung's injury.
In the women’s doubles final, Japan’s Sakura Yokoi and Sachi Aoki proved too powerful for the top-seeded Korean pair of Ryu Hanna and Kim Nayeong, winning by a score of 3-1 (11-6, 6-11, 11-8, 11-8).
Earlier, India's aspirations in the men’s singles were cut short as Czechia's Lubomir Jancarik secured his third consecutive win over an Indian player, defeating Sathiyan G 3-0 (11-6, 11-8, 13-11) in the quarterfinals. Jancarik previously overcame Manush Shah and Manav Thakar in earlier rounds and will now go on to face Park Ganghyeon from the Republic of Korea in the semifinals.
Sathiyan had earlier kept India's hopes alive in the men’s singles, rallying from a 1-2 deficit to beat Ionescu 3-2 (9-11, 11-3, 10-12, 11-7, 11-5) and advance to face Jancarik, who had also defeated Manush Shah 3-1 (11-4, 13-11, 5-11, 13-11).
Meanwhile, Sehit Suravajjula’s remarkable run came to an end when he lost 3-1 (11-6, 10-12, 15-13, 11-7) against top seed Oh Junsung. The Korean subsequently forfeited his quarterfinal match against Frenchman Thibault Poret due to an injury incurred during the mixed doubles semifinals. India’s challenge in the women’s singles ended as qualifier Nithya Mani fell 3-1 (9-11, 11-5, 11-6, 11-8) to Cheng I-Ching, the fourth seed from Chinese Taipei, in the pre-quarterfinals.
