Aryaveer Dewan scripted history on Sunday, 24 May by becoming only the fourth Indian male to win the Asian boys' Under-19 squash title, clinching the championship at the 33rd Asian Junior Individual Squash Championships in Panzhihua, China. The Delhi-based teenager dismantled South Korea's Jonghyeok Lee in the final with a dominant 11-2, 11-7, 11-9 scoreline, completing the job in under an hour.

A Final Without Doubt

Seeded 3/4 heading into the tournament, Dewan left no room for uncertainty in the title match. His clinical display across three games — winning every set by a comfortable margin — signalled a maturity well beyond his years. The entire contest lasted under 60 minutes, reflecting the gulf in class on the day.

Back-to-Back Continental Titles

This victory is not Dewan's first taste of Asian glory. He had claimed the boys' Under-17 title at the same championship last year, making him a rare double continental champion across age groups. The back-to-back titles firmly establish him as the most compelling junior squash prospect India has produced in recent years.

Cyrus Poncha, secretary-general of the Squash Rackets Federation of India (SRFI), hailed the achievement. 'This is an absolutely magnificent achievement by Aryaveer winning two consecutive titles. It will undoubtedly provide him with tremendous confidence as we approach the World Junior Championships in a couple of months,' Poncha said.

India's Broader Medal Haul

Beyond Dewan's gold, India returned from Panzhihua with one gold, three silver, and four bronze medals across age categories — a haul that underscores the country's growing depth in junior squash.

In the boys' Under-17 final, Shiven Agarwal claimed silver, going down to Pakistan's Nauman Khan in a four-game contest, 10-12, 11-7, 11-2, 11-5. Anika Dubey secured silver in the girls' Under-17 category, losing to Malaysia's Harleein Tan by 9-11, 11-4, 12-10, 11-4. The third silver came from Amarya Bajaj in the boys' Under-13 final, who fell narrowly to Hong Kong's Leung Ngo San in five games, 5-11, 8-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-6.

India's bronze medallists were Lokesh Subramani (boys' Under-17), Abhyuday Arora (boys' Under-13), and Shanaya Parasrampuria and Divyanshi Jain (girls' Under-13).

Eyes on the World Junior Championships

With the World Junior Championships scheduled later this year, Dewan's Asian title arrives at the ideal moment. The SRFI's confidence in his trajectory is evident, and the continental crown gives him the ranking points and psychological edge to compete at the highest junior level.
