London, July 24 (NationPress) Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan has acknowledged the significant influence of ex-captain MS Dhoni in his international journey, highlighting him as a crucial ally during the early stages of his career.

The 39-year-old Dhawan, who debuted in ODIs in 2010 and gained fame with a stunning century on his Test debut in 2013 against Australia, where he recorded the fastest Test century on debut in just 85 balls, became an essential player in India's limited-overs squad under Dhoni's captaincy.

"I believe Dhoni bhai provided immense support and genuinely backed me. His faith in my abilities at the beginning of my career was transformative. When a leader demonstrates such trust, it significantly contributes to your growth and success," Dhawan shared with IANS during the charity event 'Beyond the Boundaries' in London.

While Dhawan also recognized the backing he received from Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma during their tenures as captains, he emphasized that Dhoni's early mentorship was foundational.

"Later, both Virat and Rohit offered their support when they took on captaincy roles. However, Dhoni bhai's assistance in my initial years was truly exceptional," he remarked.

Beyond the captains, Dhawan expressed his appreciation for the coaches and support staff, stating, "The contribution of the support staff and coaches is equally crucial. Their motivation off the field enables you to excel on it," he concluded.

Known as Gabbar, Dhawan retired from all formats of cricket in August last year after a remarkable career spanning over a decade. He has participated in 34 Tests, 167 ODIs, and 68 T20Is, accumulating 2315, 6793, and 1579 runs, respectively, across these formats.

Dhawan has represented Delhi in domestic First-Class and List A cricket and has played for franchises such as Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai Indians, Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, and Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Currently, he is involved with the T20 league in Nepal, playing for Karnali Yaks since 2024.
