Mitchell McClenaghan Advocates for MS Dhoni's Return as Impact Player Against KKR
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 14 (NationPress) Due to a calf injury, MS Dhoni has missed the initial two weeks of IPL 2026. However, former New Zealand cricketer Mitchell McClenaghan suggested that if the wicketkeeper-batter is recovered, the Chennai Super Kings should consider his inclusion as an impact player against the Kolkata Knight Riders this Tuesday. This role would minimize his running requirements.
On Monday, Dhoni engaged in a brief net session during the latter part of CSK's training at Chepauk, focusing mainly on throwdowns from the coaching team, including batting coach Mike Hussey. While he has been participating in team drills, Dhoni has not yet returned to full intensity.
“If MS Dhoni is fit, CSK should definitely incorporate him as an impact player. Should the management require a quick flurry of runs, especially while chasing, utilizing him as an impact substitute would optimize his batting skills. This role would allow him to contribute without excessive running,” McClenaghan shared with JioStar.
Dhoni has already missed the first four matches for CSK and is likely to sit out the fifth match on Tuesday as well. He has not been traveling with the squad for away games nor participating in home matches at Chepauk, making it plausible for him to miss another game.
“He can simply step in, launch the ball into the stands, and execute his finishing role effectively. His powerful batting style will be beneficial for Chennai, especially when they are targeting large totals. I believe this is an excellent strategy to reintegrate Dhoni into the team. His presence would significantly bolster CSK's lower middle order,” he added.
Following three consecutive losses, CSK achieved their first victory on Sunday against the Delhi Capitals, with notable performances from Sanju Samson (115*) and Jamie Overton (4-18), who played key roles in securing the win.
