Could a Djokovic vs. Sinner Semi-Final Be the Match of Wimbledon?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, July 7 (NationPress) Veteran Indian tennis player Vijay Amritraj asserts that a potential semi-final encounter between Serbian icon Novak Djokovic and world No. 1 Jannik Sinner at the Wimbledon men's singles tournament is definitely a match to watch during this prestigious grass-court Grand Slam.
Amritraj pointed out the intensifying rivalry between Sinner and world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, as both players have claimed all Grand Slam titles since 2024. Among tennis legends - Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Djokovic - the Serbian's last Grand Slam triumph was at the 2023 French Open, while Federer hung up his racquet in 2022 and Nadal concluded his illustrious career last year.
As Djokovic approaches the twilight of his career, Amritraj believes that the fierce competition between Sinner and Alcaraz has a promising future following their thrilling Roland Garros final last month.
"I think Sinner and Alcaraz have established a compelling rivalry, having clinched the last six Grand Slam titles between them. I genuinely believe there is a significant rivalry brewing," Amritraj, a JioStar Wimbledon expert, shared with IANS during a virtual interaction.
"Djokovic remains a formidable contender, especially on grass. It will be intriguing to see how the week unfolds for him. If he reaches the semi-finals to face Sinner, that would undoubtedly be a match to watch," he added.
When asked who he would consider as the 'greater player' among the current top two, the former Indian tennis star remarked, "It largely depends on injuries, physical condition, motivation, and work ethic. They both have shown unmistakable talent and dedication. It also hinges on staying physically fit and strong.
"That’s why they surround themselves with excellent physical teams to keep them in top shape. They are both 22 and 23 years old, having competed against each other since their junior days. The future is bright, but they’re off to an impressive start.
Amritraj praised Alcaraz's diverse skill set, calling him a complete player.
"He possesses remarkable variety in his game, which is often lacking among many players today. While they excel from the baseline and serve well, their volleying skills are not as strong. In contrast, Alcaraz offers a balanced mix, incorporating drop shots and lobs.
"His movement is exceptional; he can earn three points on his serve and plays aggressively from the back. Most importantly, he has a strong mindset. The real question is how soon players will figure out how to breach his defenses. That’s where Alcaraz stands today," he explained.
In the round of 16 matchups, Djokovic will face Australia’s Alex de Minaur, while Sinner is set to compete against Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov on Monday.
Meanwhile, defending Wimbledon champion Alcaraz will take on Britain’s Cameron Norrie in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.
