Dutch Forward Depay Finds His Place in Brazilian Football with Corinthians

Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Dec 18 (NationPress) Dutch striker Memphis Depay has lauded Brazilian football following a promising start to his tenure with the esteemed South American team Corinthians. The 30-year-old former Manchester United and Barcelona player has scored seven times in 14 matches for the Sao Paulo club, joining them on a free transfer in September.
"Corinthians are a fantastic team in Brazil, the largest," he stated. "So far, we have been performing exceptionally well, and I feel like I'm home. The people in Brazil are incredibly enthusiastic and vibrant. The country is stunning, and the cuisine is delightful. The training facilities are outstanding."
Depay played a pivotal role in helping Corinthians conclude a challenging 2024 season with nine straight victories in the Brazilian Serie A championship. This impressive winning streak propelled the team from the relegation zone in October to seventh place in the 20-team standings, ensuring their qualification for the Copa Libertadores qualifying rounds, according to reports from Xinhua.
"I felt the need to pursue something different [in my career], and I enjoy challenges," he said regarding his choice to leave European football for Brazil.
"I was unaware of the Brazilian Championship. I only knew that Brazil is the epicenter of football. All the talent originates from there. I wanted to experience that, and they persuaded me," he added.
Corinthians, the Brazilian Serie A club, finalized the acquisition of the Dutch forward in September this year, reportedly overcoming competition for Depay's signature from clubs in Saudi Arabia, Spain, and Mexico.
In addition to Atletico, his career has seen him play for Lyon and PSV Eindhoven. He has earned 98 caps for the Netherlands and scored 46 goals.
