Hyderabad (Telangana), June 28 (NationPress) - Two-time World Champion Nikhat Zareen kicked off her journey in the 48–51kg category with an impressive 4:1 victory against Rashi Sharma from Uttar Pradesh during the Elite Women’s Boxing Tournament held at the Saroornagar Indoor Stadium on Saturday.
In a remarkable turn of events, Anjali from Haryana triumphed over World Championships bronze medallist Manisha Moun in the 57-60 kg category.
This tournament, organized by the Telangana Boxing Federation in collaboration with the Boxing Federation of India and the Sports Authority of Telangana, is set to showcase talents from 15 units, including the top 12 teams from the 8th Elite Women’s Nationals—Railways, Haryana, All India Police, Services, Punjab, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Sikkim—alongside host Telangana, the Combined SAI National Centre of Excellence team, and the TOPS Core & Development squad.
Notable results from Day 1 included a decisive win for the 2023 world champion Nitu (Haryana) in the 45–48kg category, defeating Rajani Singh (UP) 5:0, while Yashi Sharma from Telangana claimed victory over K. Monisha (Tamil Nadu) 5:0 in the 60–65kg category.
Another impressive performance came from Laxmi of the TOPS setup, who secured a dominant 5:0 win in the 51–54kg bout against Ragini (UP). Former World Youth Champion Ankushita Boro is also competing in this category.
The boxers will compete across ten weight categories, with the gold and silver medalists earning the chance to join the elite national camp in Patiala. More than 100 top contenders are vying for victory in this event.
Teams can enter a maximum of 10 boxers, provided they were born between January 1, 1985, and December 31, 2006. The championships will adhere to the World Boxing Technical & Competitions Rules, with each bout consisting of three rounds of three minutes each, interspersed with a minute's rest. A ten-point scoring system will be implemented, and the review system will not be utilized.
