Did Harry Brook Admit England Underestimated Opponents Ahead of Super 8s?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Pallekele, Feb 21 (NationPress) England's captain Harry Brook has acknowledged that the team may have underestimated several opponents during the Group stage, and he assures that they are eager to perform strongly in the Super 8s, where their first match will be against the co-hosts, Sri Lanka, at the Pallekele International Stadium this Sunday.
England's journey in the tournament up to this point has been shaky, nearly facing defeat in their opening game against Nepal by a mere four runs. Following that, they suffered a significant loss to the two-time champions, West Indies.
Nevertheless, they secured victories in the subsequent matches against Italy and Scotland, allowing them to progress to the Super 8s.
“The start to the competition was obviously challenging. We likely underestimated a few of the teams, and they fought hard. We came here with the goal of advancing, and thankfully, we have made it to the Super Eights; that’s our primary focus now,” Brook stated during a pre-match press conference.
Brook also discussed the team's strategy to dismiss Sri Lanka's opener Pathum Nissanka, who has been in excellent form. Nissanka recently scored a century against Australia and poses a significant threat to England in the upcoming match.
“Some of their batters are performing exceptionally well, so hopefully, we can take a few wickets during the power play. Nissanka is in good form at the moment, so getting him out early would be ideal,” he commented.
The 27-year-old critiqued the cautious batting approach observed during the tournament, urging his teammates to adopt a more aggressive stance right from the start to put the opposition under pressure.
“I want us to play aggressively in those 20 overs and really challenge the opposition with our batting, aiming to exert pressure on them. There won’t be much change in our strategy,” he asserted.
“With no points carried over into the Super Eights, it’s a fresh slate, and we can approach it as such. I believe we can afford to be bolder in certain scenarios,” Brook added.
England boasts a solid record against Sri Lanka in T20Is, having triumphed in 13 of the 17 encounters between the two teams.
