Yupia (Arunachal Pradesh), May 19 (NationPress) Head coach Bibiano Fernandes expressed immense pride in his team after India clinched the SAFF U19 title at the Golden Jubilee Stadium on Sunday.
The match concluded in a 1-1 tie after regular play, leading to a tense penalty shootout. India initially led with a goal from captain Singamayum Shami in the second minute, but Bangladesh equalized through Md Joy Ahamed in the 61st minute.
In a thrilling penalty shootout, India secured a 4-3 victory, and Fernandes praised their remarkable spirit.
“We anticipated a challenging final. Bangladesh proved their strength by coming back from behind. However, our players demonstrated remarkable spirit throughout the 90 minutes and beyond,” Fernandes stated during the post-match conference.
“We must also recognize Bangladesh's resilience. They showcased their quality as a team. The match was entertaining, and ultimately, we are delighted to emerge as champions,” added Fernandes, who celebrated his fourth junior SAFF title.
Despite the final being a nail-biter, Fernandes felt confident about the Blue Colts' capabilities.
“I was optimistic about the penalties because I trust my players completely. Our goalkeeper, Suraj (Singh Aheibam), is exceptional at saving penalties. He has been outstanding in training during our practice sessions. We knew he would shine for us,” Fernandes remarked.
“The rest of the boys needed to focus on scoring.”
While the India U19s displayed remarkable composure during tense moments, their 48-year-old coach attributed much of this mentality to the overwhelming support from fans.
“The atmosphere in Arunachal Pradesh was incredible. I’ve never witnessed such a large turnout for a junior match in India. This is a moment we will cherish forever,” he said. “The crowd was fantastic, and the players thrived in their presence.
“I want to dedicate this victory to the fans from Arunachal Pradesh; their support was invaluable. They inspired us to perform at our best. I believe this will motivate more young players to aspire to represent the national team, leading to more talents like Omang (Dodum) emerging,” he concluded.
The Blue Colts will now regroup and begin preparations for the AFC U20 Asian Cup Qualifiers, scheduled for next year.
“India possesses abundant talent. With proper development, we can hope to see India qualify for the World Cup — that remains our enduring dream,” stated Fernandes.
