Itanagar, May 6 (NationPress) Head coach Bibiano Fernandes has officially revealed the 23-member Indian squad for the upcoming SAFF U19 Championship, set to take place in Arunachal Pradesh from May 9 to 18.
The Indian team arrived in Itanagar on April 30, initially with a 25-member provisional squad, and has been preparing in the city for this significant subcontinental event, following a preliminary training camp in Bengaluru.
India will compete in Group B of the championship, facing Nepal and Sri Lanka, with their first match scheduled against Sri Lanka on May 9 at the Golden Jubilee Stadium.
Fernandes commented, “We commenced preparations over a month ago in Bengaluru with around 50 scouted players participating in trials. I was not taken aback by the talent these boys possess. I’m genuinely pleased with the quality of scouting that led us to these players. It has been a comprehensive journey to build the team from that point onward.”
The 48-year-old coach, who has triumphed at the SAFF junior championships on three occasions, emphasized the significance of the team’s acclimatization.
“We appreciate the Federation for bringing us here early to adjust to the altitude, terrain, and climate. We have also engaged in practice matches, both in Bengaluru and Itanagar, which have significantly contributed to our team’s development,” he remarked.
