New Delhi, June 23 (NationPress) The McLaren Formula 1 Team has revealed that Alex Dunne, a member of their Driver Development Programme, will participate in Free Practice 1 at the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix, stepping in for Lando Norris.

The 19-year-old driver started karting at the age of eight and clinched his first European karting title in the 2019 WSK Champions Cup in the OKJ category. He made his debut in single-seaters during the 2021 Spanish F4 Championship, where he achieved pole position and a podium finish right out of the gate. Over the course of the 2022 season, he amassed a total of 16 race victories while competing in the British, UAE, and Italian Formula 4 Championships, earning him the British F4 Championship title, followed by a vice-championship in the GB3 Championship the next year.

“This is an incredible opportunity for me to drive in FP1 in Austria. I can't wait to get behind the wheel of the MCL39 and assist the team with the setup for the upcoming race weekend,” expressed Alex.

“I’ve been putting in the effort for this session, participating in tests for previous cars like the MCL60 and spending time on the simulator, which has been a valuable learning experience. I’m grateful to Zak, Andrea, and Alessandro for their confidence in me. This is a significant milestone in my journey with the McLaren Driver Development Programme, and I’m eager to join the team on the track,” he added.

Alex was announced as a part of the McLaren Driver Development Programme in May 2024 while competing in FIA Formula 3. He currently races for Rodin Motorsport in FIA Formula 2 and also serves as a reserve and development driver for the McLaren Formula E Team.

He will drive the MCL39 as part of his development within the McLaren Racing pipeline, which aims to facilitate drivers' progress toward Formula 1, IndyCar, and the team’s upcoming participation in the World Endurance Championship.

Earlier this year, Pato O’Ward participated in FP1 at the 2025 Mexico City Grand Prix. The team is expected to announce the drivers for the remaining two Free Practice sessions soon, completing their four young driver outings as required by the 2025 Sporting Regulations.

“We are thrilled to provide Alex the opportunity to run in Free Practice 1, allowing him to gain invaluable experience behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car as part of his development. The team is excited to work more closely with him, and his feedback will be essential for car setup. These rookie sessions are crucial for identifying future talent and offering them a rare chance to drive a current car, and we look forward to seeing him on the track,” said Andrea Stella, McLaren Team Principal.
