Imphal, June 23 (NationPress) - Authorities in Manipur have taken a significant step by detaining a leader of the Meitei radical faction, Arambai Tenggol, due to his alleged role in the murder of a differently-abled individual in the Imphal West district earlier this month, as confirmed by an official on Monday.

A high-ranking official indicated that the primary suspect, Longjam Khaba Singh (35), also known as Boi, was apprehended for his supposed involvement in the homicide of Md Chesam Abdul Kadir from Mongsangei Makha Leikai Arubam Leikai in the Imphal West area.

To date, a total of 10 individuals, including Khaba Singh, have been taken into custody concerning this murder case. Abdul Kadir, who was affiliated with the Meitei Pangal (Muslim) community, disappeared during the early hours of June 11, and his remains were subsequently discovered buried in Samurou Naorem, leading to widespread public demonstrations.

The police conducted an exhumation on June 17, under the supervision of an executive magistrate, forensic experts, and family members. Ajay Kumar Bhalla, the Governor of Manipur, has assured that appropriate legal measures would be taken regarding the murder of the 29-year-old physically challenged Abdul Kadir.

A representative from the Raj Bhavan mentioned that a delegation led by National People’s Party (NPP) MLA Khuraijam Loken Singh, alongside members of the Joint Action Committee, met with the Governor. They urged him to enforce strict action against those responsible.

The delegation presented a memorandum to Bhalla emphasizing the immediate requirement to capture the accused and to guarantee that justice is achieved in a timely and transparent manner.

Earlier, five vehicles were confiscated as part of the investigation.

Abdul Kadir had reportedly been accused of theft and assaulted by several individuals, after which he was reported missing.

This tragic incident has ignited outrage throughout the state, particularly among the Meitei Pangal (Muslim) community.

The Manipur Meitei Pangal Welfare Organisation (MMWO) has vocally condemned the alleged abduction and murder of Abdul Kadir.

MMWO Secretary General Firoz Khan has called upon the government to impose stringent penalties on those involved in the incident. Other organizations have classified the act as a “heartless crime” and have connected it to a troubling trend of violence, including murders, kidnappings, and extortion, which has been prevalent in the valley region of Manipur over the past two years.

They have appealed to both the Governor and the central government for immediate intervention to ensure justice for the victim.
