London, July 6 (NationPress) Taylor Fritz has reached his third Wimbledon quarter-final after Jordan Thompson was compelled to retire due to injury during their fourth-round match on No. 1 Court. The fifth-seeded American was ahead 6-1, 3-0 when the Australian had to end the match abruptly.
Having arrived in London on the high of a record fourth Eastbourne title, Fritz faced a physically taxing journey to the last 16. He triumphed in a five-set battle against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the first round and another marathon against Gabriel Diallo in the second round before overcoming Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in four sets. With a total of nine hours and 43 minutes on court, the 26-year-old needed only 40 minutes in his fourth-round match.
Thompson, ranked World No. 44, came into the match with his right leg heavily bandaged and struggled visibly with a back issue. The 31-year-old had fought through two five-set matches and a four-set victory over Luciano Darderi to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon for the first time in his career.
“This isn’t how I want to advance. Jordan has been really tough out here. He played a lengthy doubles match yesterday. I have immense respect for him for even stepping onto the court,” Fritz expressed.
Currently sitting 12th in the ATP Live Race To Turin, Fritz is set to face Karen Khachanov next as he aims to break into the Top 10 and secure his return to the Nitto ATP Finals. Khachanov, a quarter-finalist at Wimbledon in 2021, defeated Kamil Majchrzak 6-4, 6-2, 6-3, showcasing a dominant performance with 44 winners.
With his grass-court form peaking, Fritz is determined to take another stride toward a deep run at SW19—and perhaps another opportunity for season-ending success in Turin.
