Bharatpur (Rajasthan), Dec 17 (NationPress) The ascent of the Indian Premier League's (IPL) latest star, Kartik Sharma, is more than just a cricket triumph; it's a compelling narrative of sacrifice, resilience, and steadfast faith. Once facing nights of hunger and temporary shelters due to financial struggles, Kartik has now become one of India’s priciest IPL signings, fetching Rs. 14.20 crore during the auction on Tuesday.

Upon his IPL selection, Kartik returned to his hometown of Bharatpur with his parents, receiving a heartfelt and emotional reception at Agarwal Dharamshala, Khirni Ghat. Esteemed members of the local community and the Bharatpur District Cricket Association (BDCA) gathered to celebrate the young cricketer, whose success has instilled pride in the entire district.

Kartik’s father, Manoj Sharma, who sustains a humble livelihood, reminisced about the struggles that paved the way for his son's achievements. “Our financial resources were limited, but my wife Radha and I harbored a dream — to nurture Kartik's cricket aspirations, regardless of the sacrifices required,” he shared with IANS.

To finance Kartik’s training and tournaments, the family sold their land and agricultural assets in Bahnera village. Kartik’s mother parted with her jewelry, transforming personal sacrifice into silent yet impactful support. “This was a challenging time for us, but we never allowed Kartik's dreams to shatter,” Manoj emphasized.

A pivotal moment in Kartik’s journey occurred during a tournament in Gwalior. Manoj accompanied his son, anticipating early elimination after four or five matches—the only duration they could afford to stay.

However, Kartik’s remarkable performance propelled the team to the finals, and with their finances depleted, father and son had to find refuge in a night shelter. “There was a night we went to bed hungry,” Manoj recounted. “Only after winning the final and receiving the prize money could we return home.”

Kartik’s cricketing prowess was apparent from a young age. At merely two and a half years old, he swung a bat with such force that it shattered two photo frames in their home. “That moment convinced us he was destined for greatness,” said his father.

Interestingly, Manoj himself had once played cricket, but an injury cut short his career. “I couldn’t fulfill my dream, so I resolved that my son would,” he said—an ambition now realized in ways beyond imagination.

Despite early promise, Kartik’s path was fraught with challenges. He participated in Under-14 and Under-16 levels but faced a four-year stretch without selections. Many would have given up, but the young cricketer persevered.

“I just kept playing,” Kartik told IANS. “My father continued to train me. Ultimately, I earned a spot on the Under-19 team, followed by the Ranji Trophy.”

His impressive domestic performances eventually led to his IPL opportunity. Despite the sudden fame, Kartik remains humble. He completed his Class 12 this year and plans to pursue higher education alongside his cricket career. “My studies are crucial to me,” he stated.

Kartik’s youngest brother plays cricket, while his middle brother focuses on academics—a testament to the family’s commitment to discipline and balance. Kartik’s narrative now serves as a beacon of hope for numerous aspiring athletes from small towns and financially constrained backgrounds. From selling land and jewelry to enduring nights of hunger in shelters, his family's sacrifices have culminated in a moment that has transformed their lives.
