New Delhi, March 15 (NationPress) India's head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has disclosed that the choice to reinstate Sanju Samson in the playing XI during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 was motivated by a distinct aggressive strategy, rather than specific tactical match-ups. He emphasized that the wicketkeeper-batter has the potential to change the outcome of games within the initial powerplay overs.

In discussing the decision, Gambhir highlighted the management's desire for increased firepower at the top of the batting order, aligning with the team's aggressive stance adopted over the past 18 months.

“I know many will speculate about our intention to separate the three left-handers at the top, but that is not the case. Our focus was on enhancing our explosiveness because our philosophy for the last year and a half has been to be as aggressive as possible. Bringing in Sanju was not about countering the off-spinner from the other end. I am confident that a quality batter can excel against any bowler, be it an off-spinner or a left-arm spinner. It was simply about maximizing our firepower at the start and being assertive in the first six overs,” Gambhir stated during an interview with JioStar.

He underscored Samson’s capability to transform games with his batting, noting that the right-hander’s inclusion adds another layer to an already formidable batting lineup.

“We are well aware of Sanju's abilities; there was never any uncertainty regarding his talent or explosiveness. If he finds his rhythm, he can secure victory for you in the first six overs. Consider having Abhishek, Sanju, and Ishan as your top three followed by the likes of Surya, Hardik, Tilak, Shivam, and Axar. It’s an enviable situation,” he remarked.

The former opener also shared insights on his conversation with Samson regarding his return to the squad, which took place prior to India’s match against Zimbabwe, revealing the informal nature of their dialogue.

“I informed him while we were both at the gym. I simply mentioned that he would be playing against Zimbabwe, to which he replied, 'let it come.' Our discussions are quite casual; it’s not a typical head coach-player dynamic. Most of our one-on-one interactions occur during practice,” he explained.

Gambhir also expressed his support for young opener Abhishek Sharma despite his slow start in the tournament, encouraging him to remain bold and concentrate on his approach rather than the pressure surrounding his scores.

“I had a more challenging experience in 2014 during the IPL when I recorded three consecutive ducks, followed by another in the fourth game. I told him that while people may focus on his scores and discuss his form, he is not out of form; he is merely out of runs,” Gambhir reflected.

He further clarified that players should only be assessed after they have spent enough time in the crease, stating, “You can only ascertain your form after facing 20 to 30 balls, and he hasn’t even had 20 balls yet. I just want him to approach the next game with even greater aggression than before.”

Encouraging the young talent to maintain his aggressive mindset, Gambhir added, “If you want to hit the first ball for six, go for it, and commit fully because it truly doesn’t matter what the outside world thinks. What matters is the perception of the 30 individuals in the dressing room, and that should be the primary focus for all the players. We have unwavering faith in Abhishek, and indeed in everyone selected to represent the country in the T20 World Cup.”
