New Delhi, Mar 1 (NationPress) As India prepares for a crucial T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8s match against the West Indies, ex-India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has expressed strong support for Sanju Samson's position at the top of the batting order. He emphasized that the wicketkeeper-batter injects essential balance and aggression into India's batting lineup.
Bangar pointed out the strategic benefit of deploying a right-handed batsman at the top, which helps to thwart the opposing team's ability to leverage spin, particularly off-spin, against India's predominantly left-handed batting lineup.
"By placing a right-hander at the top, India limits the opposition's chances to employ off-spin effectively. The issue isn't that off-spinners are particularly troublesome for left-handers; rather, the batters tend to force the play, leading to their dismissals," Bangar explained during a conversation with Jio Hotstar.
He added, "This combination works well because having three right-handers among the top seven maintains a right-left batting dynamic, thereby restricting the opposition from utilizing four overs of off-spin."
Bangar noted that Samson's aggressive approach significantly impacted the game, especially after India's earlier difficulties with opening partnerships in the tournament. The 53-year-old former cricketer believes that Sanju's early offense relieved pressure on Abhishek, allowing him to find his rhythm against Zimbabwe.
"Sanju Samson was notably proactive and moved fluidly within the crease. This created scoring opportunities and provided India with the aggressive start they needed," he remarked.
"Prior to the Zimbabwe game, India was averaging less than 10 runs in their opening partnerships over the last four or five matches. Sanju's performance gave Abhishek time to settle in, resulting in a solid start for India," Bangar added.
Samson contributed with a quickfire 24 runs off just 15 balls after returning to the playing XI against Zimbabwe. He also showcased his skills behind the stumps with a remarkable catch.
