T20 World Cup: Morkel Commends Samson's Resilience and Hard Work
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, March 4 (NationPress) Opener Sanju Samson has been part of the Indian T20 squad for several years, including the 2024 T20 World Cup, where he missed the initial playing XI but struggled with inconsistent performances. However, he has made a striking comeback in this edition of the World Cup after being given a chance in three matches.
Morne Morkel, the bowling coach for the Indian team, praised the 31-year-old right-handed batter for his dedication and composure. Samson's remarkable performance, which included an unbeaten 97 in a crucial match against the West Indies, was instrumental in ensuring India’s advancement to the semifinals.
“Sanju is an exceptional player. He consistently puts in the effort during practice. When the opportunity arose, he demonstrated his class and experience,” Morkel stated.
“He was given the chance, and as someone with considerable experience, he rose to the occasion in a pivotal game. From a coaching perspective, it was about providing him the necessary support even after he lost his spot in the lineup.”
“For him, it was always about putting in quality practice at the nets. You never know when a situation like this may arise in a tournament. So, credit goes to him for maintaining his hope, continuing to work hard, and enhancing his strengths. In professional sports, it's essential to stay prepared. You should be ready to seize the moment. Kudos to him for staying composed and overcoming that challenging phase, delivering a solid performance for India,” Morkel added ahead of India’s semifinal match against England at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.
The former South African pace bowler dismissed the idea that explosive opener Abhishek Sharma has lost confidence or is trying to shift his game from all-out aggression to a more measured approach.
“No, this game can be unforgiving at times. Sanju faced a similar situation. Throughout a career, you will encounter instances like this,” he explained.
“It's a valuable learning experience for him. For a young player establishing himself in international cricket, this will only aid his development in Indian cricket. Regarding Abhishek's form, sometimes it takes just one or two successful shots for him to regain his rhythm and confidence. This is a positive sign as he typically doesn’t stress too much about his technique. Generally, players like him require more time to rebuild their confidence.”
“As I mentioned, tomorrow presents a fresh start for him. He has a chance to excel. He recently scored a hundred against England, so it's about revisiting those successful moments and crafting a strategy while understanding that he starts from zero tomorrow. It's a new opportunity for him to shine,” Morkel concluded.
