New Delhi, March 9 (NationPress) Renowned cricketer Sunil Gavaskar praised the remarkable journey of Sanju Samson, who has emerged as a key figure in India's T20 World Cup victory, transforming his past failures into three outstanding performances. Gavaskar remarked that life has indeed come full circle for the wicketkeeper.

During the final at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, India's impressive 96-run win over New Zealand secured their third ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title and marked their second consecutive win. Additionally, India has made history by becoming the first team to clinch the championship on home turf.

“India's trophy cabinet is now overflowing. Securing ICC trophies is no small feat; it’s far more challenging than bilateral dominance. ICC tournaments leave no room for mistakes; you must deliver your best performance in every match. It demands skill, not just luck. The weight of expectation is enormous as these players represent over a billion fans when they take the field,” Gavaskar expressed.

“No team has managed to win consecutive T20 World Cups, and defending a title is incredibly challenging. Opposing teams come prepared. The Associate nations displayed commendable performances in this edition of the T20 World Cup, posing significant challenges to the more established sides.

“South Africa and New Zealand were well-prepared. Australia didn’t even make it to the Super 8. Winning back-to-back T20 World Cups is a monumental achievement. This undoubtedly ranks as one of the finest moments in Indian cricket history,” Gavaskar noted on JioStar.

Sanju Samson, a pivotal player in India's record-breaking victory, initially did not play in the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup but was reinstated into the playing eleven for the Super Eights match against Zimbabwe.

Samson showcased his brilliance in the must-win game against the West Indies, scoring a memorable 97 not out, followed by stellar performances of 89 in the semi-final against England and another strong display in the final against New Zealand, earning him the Player of the Tournament accolade.

In total, Samson scored 321 runs at an impressive average of 80.25 and a strike rate of 199.37. Gavaskar commended Samson for delivering the best innings of his career under the immense pressure of knockout matches. “For Sanju Samson, life has indeed come full circle. Prior to the 2026 T20 World Cup, he faced a tough series against New Zealand, resulting in his exclusion. After a brief stint against Namibia, where his performance fell short, he was next seen in the Super 8 against Zimbabwe.

“His redemption truly began in the virtual quarter-final against the West Indies, where he played a spectacular innings, demonstrating complete control. We know Sanju’s capabilities, but excelling in a virtual quarter-final, a semi-final against England, and then the crucial final against New Zealand is no small task.

Another significant contributor to India's title run was the exceptional pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who took 4 wickets for 15 runs in the final at his home ground and finished the World Cup as the joint leading wicket-taker with 14 wickets.

Former India leg-spinner Piyush Chawla praised Bumrah, calling him ‘a national treasure’.

“Jasprit Bumrah is truly a national asset. He has consistently made top batsmen from opposing teams struggle throughout the 2026 T20 World Cup. His performance in this tournament has been nothing short of phenomenal. He is invaluable to Team India.

“Whenever India needs a pivotal wicket, Bumrah is the one who steps up. In challenging situations, the captain often looks to him, knowing he is among the best. His variety of bowling techniques and strategies is impressive, but mastering when to deploy each technique is complex.

“In the final, on a pitch where the ball was coming nicely onto the bat, Bumrah claimed all his wickets with slower deliveries. Other bowlers were conceding runs, but Bumrah, from the onset, took his first wicket with a slower ball. Such skills come with experience,” he concluded.
